Might the Cowboys take a look at Kellen Moore?
IRVING, Texas -- The trade deadline is today and I don’t really wonder if theDallas Cowboys will make a deal.
They made three already to bring in Matt Cassel, Brice Butler and Christine Michael.
But I do wonder some other things, which is a good thing since it’s Tuesday and everybody knows Tuesday is Five Wonders day.
Away we go:
• I thought Jason Garrett had a peculiar answer when he was asked if Matt Cassel would start the next two games before Tony Romo’s expected return. He said, “Matt is going to be our starting quarterback this week.” The “this” week was the part that caught my attention. As a result, I wonder if the Cowboys would consider starting Kellen Moore Nov. 15 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers if they don’t beat the Philadelphia Eagles this week. If they lose, Cassel would have the same 0-3 record as Brandon Weeden. Moore is a favorite of offensive coordinator Scott Linehan with their ties to the Detroit Lions.
• It was not surprising the Cowboys declined to pick up Morris Claiborne’s fifth-year option. He did not do enough in his first three years to merit the big-money option. But I wonder if the Cowboys will look to sign Claiborne to a long-term deal. Claiborne doesn’t have an interception this season but he has been the Cowboys’ best corner -- and that’s not meant to be damning with faint praise.Brandon Carr will be in the final year of his deal next year and I can’t imagine the Cowboys will want to pay him $9.1 million. Orlando Scandrick is coming off major knee surgery. Corey White will be a free agent. There is at least one precedent in a team passing on the option but keeping their former first-round pick. Last year, the New Orleans Saints declined to pick up the fifth-year option on running back Mark Ingram but kept him before the free-agent market opened in March.
• Back to the quarterbacks for a second. When Romo returns, the Cowboys will have to make a roster move. I just noted that Moore is a favorite of Linehan. The Cowboys can’t carry four quarterbacks, especially with Cassel and Weeden set to be free agents after the season. I wonder which quarterback draws the short straw. Moore would make the most sense, but I wonder if they would look to move on from Weeden. I can’t see them moving on from Cassel, who makes more money. Just something to remember: Cassel has the same agent as Jason Garrett (and Linehan). I’ve wondered this before, but I wonder if he would be a candidate to return as the backup in 2016.
• I wonder when a Cowboys cornerback will record an interception. Carr hasn’t had an interception since the Cowboys beat the Oakland Raiders on Thanksgiving in 2013, a span of 27 games. Claiborne hasn’t had a pick since Week 3 last year against the St. Louis Rams. Claiborne could have/should have had an interception against Sam Bradford in the first meeting against the Eagles. Maybe he brings that to an end this week. In case you are wondering, the last cornerback to record a pick was Scandrick in last year’s meeting against theChicago Bears. It’s been 10 games and counting.
• I wonder if the Cowboys have to do more to get their guys open. To my untrained eye, the New England Patriots have the ability to scheme their guys open. The Cowboys seem to require their guys to win one-on-one battles. The Cowboys need to do more for Dez Bryant either by putting him in motion or putting him in bunch formations. They need to do more for Jason Witten as well. Cole Beasley has gone two games without a catch. He needs some help. With the uneven quarterback play, the Cowboys don’t have their bread-and-butter pass plays available to them. It’s time for the coaches to scheme their guys open.
